I suspect the V6~4.0L~SOHC, designed in the mid 1990s, was a result of Ford's engine plant management in Cologne Germany. knowing this engine family (originating in the 1960s) would be phased out over the next 10 years anyway, thus they gave the task of redesigning\converting the preceding 4.0L~OHV into the then new 4.0L~SOHC.
